Santa Maria Novella

Tuesday 14th May 2024, 15:00

Our visit to Santa Maria Novella begins with a discussion of the role of the Dominican Order in Florence in the 15th century and how this intersected with the interests of the Florentine elite. This engagement spawned the creation of some of the most stunning fresco cycles in the city. We will begin with an unpacking of the mysteries of Masaccio’s Trinity (1420s) and how it might have functioned during the rituals of mass. Our attention will then turn to Domenico Ghirlandaio’s decoration of the monumental Tornabuoni Chapel (begun 1486) and Filippino Lippi’s enigmatic Strozzi Chapel (begun 1487).
