Florence. The world’s smallest global city, a sensory delight that has enchanted visitors over the centuries, many of whom never left. It was that tradition that gave birth to the British Institute of Florence in 1917. We are a Florentine institution, the city’s international centre for educational, cultural and social exchange, and we're your inside track to the very best of history, art and life in Florence.

Our courses offer you the best learning experiences in the city. We pride ourselves in the high quality of our monthly Art History courses which are held in our beautiful sixteenth-century Palazzo Lanfredi, overlooking the river Arno. Whether you choose to learn the wonders of Florentine Art History or the beautiful language of Italian, you can find it here at il British.

Our reputation for excellence and the fact that generations of families have learned their English at il British speaks highly of our English language courses. We provide a range of courses for all levels, including preparation for the Cambridge English Language Assessment exams.

For those who can be in Florence, our History of Art and Italian courses are held in our Palazzo Lanfredini and include curated visits to explore the city and its collections. For English courses, we are based in the language centre in Palazzo Strozzino on the other side of the Arno. As of 2020, we have a full set of online options available for those who are not able to join us in person.
