Our renowned History of Art programmes offer you a flexible set of opportunities to explore the fascinating history of creativity and culture across nine centuries. Great artists and their work are studied in detail, and always placed firmly in their social, political, religious and historical context by our brilliant team of resident experts. We offer introductory courses for people relatively new to Florence, and a series of in-depth courses devoted to the artists, monuments and masterpieces of Florence, Tuscany and Italy.

History of Art courses are offered in cycles which can be taken together or individually. They repeat three times throughout the year as follows:

Medieval Florence 05 SEP - 30 SEP 2022 09 JAN - 03 FEB 2023 03 APR - 28 APR 2023
Renaissance Florence 03 OCT - 28 OCT 2022 06 FEB - 03 MAR 2023 02 MAY - 26 MAY 2023
Thematic Courses

07 NOV - 18 NOV 2022

(Super Tuscans)

13 MAR - 24 MAR 2023

(Women in the Arts)

29 MAY - 23 JUN 2023

(360⁰ Florence)

In addition to our Medieval and Renaissance surveys, we run thematic short courses at other times of the year.

  • November will see a two-week Renaissance edition of our popular lecture series Super Tuscans, devoted to artists and architects of the region along with their most celebrated masterpieces.
  • Join us in March for a brand new course, A Century of Women in the Arts, organised in collaboration with Calliope Arts, which explores Florence's 'forgotten century' from a woman's perspective . From the Grand Tour to the unification of Italy, from the foundations of feminism, to the advent of the partisans, meet the women who forged a century of change in Florence.
  • In June, we also are running 360⁰ FLORENCE which acquaints participants with the history of Florence through a series of historical walks and museum visits. The perfect introductory programme for new residents, students, or anyone who'd like to know the city inside out, and discover its many wonders.
