Paolo Uccello (1397 - 1475)
This session delves into the geometric imagination of Paolo Uccello, an artist whose unrelenting fascination with the mathematics of space pushed the early Renaissance style toward abstraction. We will track his application of linear perspective across a diverse range of media, from the monochromatic terra verde frescoes of the Green Cloister to the vibrant, chaotic jousts of The Battle of San Romano—originally conceived as elaborate spalliera panels—and his cartoons for the stained glass oculi of Florence Cathedral. Central to our discussion will be the concept of disegno, the fundamental Florentine principle that drawing is not merely a preparatory step but the intellectual foundation of all artistic creation. By analysing Uccello’s complex wireframe studies and foreshortened figures, we will see how he elevated disegno into a rigorous science, prioritising structural clarity and vanishing points over the naturalistic ease of his contemporaries.
