This lecture profiles Benozzo Gozzoli, a painter who moved beyond the austere theology of his master, Fra Angelico, to create a world of unparalleled decorative richness and narrative delight. The session will centre on his magnum opus, the frescoes of the Chapel of the Magi within the Palazzo Medici, a work that transforms a biblical procession into a contemporary pageant of Florentine power and fashion. We will examine how Gozzoli rejected the atmospheric emptiness of the early Renaissance in favour of a dense, tapestry-like surface, crowded with exotic animals, brocaded fabrics, and the portraits of the Medici family and their allies. By analysing this shift from the structural to the ornamental, we will see how Gozzoli captured the celebratory spirit of the era, immortalising the wealth and political security of mid-Quattrocento Florence in a continuous, glittering landscape.
