Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378 - 1455)

This lecture explores dynamic world of Lorenzo Ghiberti, a titan of the early Renaissance whose goldsmithing precision and narrative elegance redefined Florentine sculpture. We will examine the evolution of his career, anchored by the decades-long execution of the North and East Doors of the Baptistery—the latter immortalised by Michelangelo as the "Gates of Paradise"—and explore how these colossal undertakings turned his workshop into a premier training ground for the city's artistic elite. By mapping his complex professional web, from his infamous 1401 competition victory over Filippo Brunelleschi to his influence on apprentices like Donatello and Paolo Uccello, we will uncover Ghiberti not just as a master craftsman, but as a shrewd entrepreneur and central node in the social fabric of 15th-century Florence.
