Global Connections

The final lecture widens the aperture to assess the global impact of Florentine ingenuity, positioning the visual arts alongside the city’s profound contributions to literature, science, and exploration. We will examine how the specific intellectual climate of Florence—characterised by rigorous observation and mathematical calculation—fuelled not only the perspective of the painters but the navigational charts of the great explorers. We will discuss figures like Amerigo Vespucci and the cartographer Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli, illustrating how the Florentine thirst for discovery extended beyond the canvas to the boundaries of the known world. By viewing the artistic output of the Quattrocento as one facet of a larger cultural phenomenon, we will conclude the course by defining Florence as the crucible of the modern mind.
