Fra Angelico (1395 - 1455)

Shifting away from the heavy, earthbound dramaticism of Masaccio, this lecture introduces the luminous, meditative vision of Fra Angelico, a figure who proved that deep piety and the avant-garde could coexist. We will explore how the "Angelic Painter" harnessed the new science of linear perspective not to ground figures in the mundane world, but to elevate the viewer toward the divine, a synthesis best exemplified in his unprecedented fresco cycle for the cells and corridors of the Convent of San Marco. By focusing on his use of unadulterated, radiant colour and his rejection of harsh shadows in favour of a universal, metaphysical light, we will define Angelico’s unique contribution to Florentine painting: a "devout style" that utilised the structural rigour of the Renaissance to encourage spiritual contemplation rather than physical presence.
