Jacopo da Pontormo (1494 - 1556)
We explore the distinctive and eccentric style of Jacopo da Pontormo, the most radical of the early Mannerists. His Deposition in the Capponi Chapel of Santa Felicita is analyzed as a manifesto of the new style: a rejection of Renaissance perspective and gravity in favor of floating, ethereal figures and jarring, acidic colors that reflect a shift toward inner, spiritual vision over external reality.
