Piazza di San Lorenzo / Piazza del Mercato

This visit will explore the area of the church of San Lorenzo, a cornerstone of Medici patronage, including the Basilica di San Lorenzo (rebuilt by Filippo Brunelleschi, begun 1419), the magnificent Medici Chapels (New Sacristy by Michelangelo, begun 1520; Princes’ Chapel begun 1604 by Matteo Nigetti) housing the tombs of the Medici family, and the bustling Mercato Centrale, a vibrant food market housed in a 19th-century iron and glass structure (designed by Giuseppe Mengoni, 1874).
