Piazza della Repubblica / Piazza Sant' Elisabetta
The "living room" of the city, with large historic cafes and luxury hotels, the Piazza della Repubblica's neoclassical buildings overlook it and the shopping arcade constituting the most elegant hub of the tourist-commercial area of the city. Much of the current appearance dates from the "Risanamento" urban renewal of the late 19th century (c. 1885-1895). Nearby, the Piazza Sant'Elisabetta offers a glimpse of Florence's Byzantine past, featuring the circular Torre della Pagliazza (6th century), one of the city's oldest towers.
