What was an academy of the early modern period? Was it different from modern social networks? Did women have a role in academies? This lecture introduces the online resource Italian Academies Database (IAD) as part of a groundbreaking collaborative project (Royal Holloway, British Library, and University of Reading) Italian Academies 1525-1700. The database has mapped the Italian world of academies as a global phenomenon, and provides users with the geography and history of a social movement that connects academies, books, and people through the description of the paratext and the use of modern technologies
