'With exquisite workmanship and skill': il parato di S.Giovanni embroidered from designs by Antonio Pollaiolo
Virtual Cultural Event, on Zoom
by Mark Roberts
The most detailed Florentine treatment of the life of St John the Baptist - patron saint of Florence, whose feast is on 24 June - is not to be found in painting or sculpture but in embroidery. The beautiful set of embroidered panels known as the parato di San Giovanni was made in the later fifteenth century to designs by Antonio Pollaiolo. Mark Roberts, who has always been fascinated by the parato, tells its surprising story.
The talk will last about 40 mins, and will be followed by a discussion using the power of video conferencing.
We request that you make a donation (however much is comfortable for you) if you wish to participate in the sessions. Your donations will help keep the Institute afloat at this difficult time; and we will give 50% of the money we receive to "Firenze per Firenze", a local funding programme that is addressing the social and economic crisis that the city of Florence is currently facing.
Thank you for your support.
