Voices from the Renaissance
A lecture by Lisa Kaborycha
Catherine of Siena writes to the pope, reprimanding his morals, while addressing him as Babbo or "Daddy"; in his memoirs, Marchione di Coppo Bonaiuti recalls burying the plague dead, comparing the layering of soil between corpses to sprinkling cheese over lasagne noodles; in a scurrilous note posted on an ancient statue in Rome, an anonymous wag praises Michelangelo for plastering the wall of the Sistine Chapel with naked rumps. In this talk, historian Lisa Kaborycha reflects on translating the words of Renaissance Italians and the challenges involved in capturing not only their ideas, but the flavor of their language for a modern English-speaking audience in her recently published volume of primary sources, Voices from the Italian Renaissance.
Lisa Kaborycha Phd is a social historian of the Florentine Renaissance who spends her time doing original research in the great historical libraries and archives of the city.
