Sir Horace Mann and the Grand Tourists

Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom and at the British Institute Library

by  Mark Roberts

Sir Horace Mann (1706-1786) was the official British representative at the Tuscan Grand Ducal court for over forty years. He was an exceptionally hospitable and obliging person, presiding over a brilliant salone in his magnificent apartments in Via Santo Spirito.  Here the leading lights of Florentine society would mingle with numerous visiting British m’lords, in Florence for their Grand Tour.  Mark Roberts, who like his subject was at his post in Florence for over forty years, explores Mann's historical importance in forging the special friendship between Florence and its international visitors and residents.
