Rediscovering the Raphael Cartoons at the V&A
Virtual Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom
by Ana Debenedetti
The Raphael Cartoons are the greatest treasures of the Renaissance in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Shortly after his election in 1513, the Medici Pope Leo X commissioned Raphael to create a set of ten full-scale designs for a series of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel, illustrating scenes from the lives of Saint Peter and Saint Paul – each measuring around 5 metres wide and 3.5 metres high.
Curator of Paintings at the V&A, Dr Ana Debenedetti, will tell the story of the seven surviving cartoons and how they came to hold pride of place in one of UK’s greatest museums.
