Playful pictures: art and carnival culture under Lorenzo de’ Medici

Lecture in English by Chriscinda Henry

This talk by Prof Henry of McGill University explores the key visual role of Carnival within aristocratic leisure and courtship culture in Lorenzo’s Florence.  Carnivalesque iconography includes Morris dancing, face-pulling, Bacchic figures of excess and sensual pleasure, and playful although often violent themes on the power of women and love.
