Picasso and the meaning of Guernica
Lecture in English by Robin Blake
On 26 April 1937 – eighty years ago today – the Basque town of Guernica was bombed and almost annihilated by the Luftwaffe’s Condor Legion and the Fascist Aviazione Legionaria. Picasso’s celebrated painting, commissioned by the Nationalist government, has had a long and turbulent history. Robin Blake is a journalist, novelist and biographer, who has previously spoken at the Institute on the painters Van Dyck and Stubbs.
