Medieval Politics: Guelfs vs. Ghibellines

Virtual Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom
by Alexandra Lawrence

Ever wondered why Dante married a woman from an “enemy” family, how exile actually worked, or why certain Florentines chose their political loyalties? In this lecture we take an in-depth look at the history of the two major factions and at the political realities of 13th and 14th-century Florence—including the split into bianchi and neri—and how the often violent clashes affected the everyday lives of citizens.
