Lecture in English by  Anne Pia

Edinburgh-based Anne Pia will read selected extracts from her acclaimed memoir of growing up in and growing away from an Italian-Scots family. The book raises issues ranging from the impact of the Arandora Star tragedy, in which her grandfather lost his life; to the complications of divorce in an Italian community in the 1950s; the struggle between tradition and modernity; the role of religion in Italian Scots life; and, the thirst for independence which is never free of the need to belong. Identity and impermanence lie at the heart of what is ultimately an account of self-direction and triumph.
