Killing Caesar

Lecture in English by Simon Gammell

There is evidence that during Shakespeare’s lifetime Julius Caesar was one of his most popular plays.  It was one of the first plays performed at the Globe theatre, which Shakespeare acquired for his company in 1599, the same year that he wrote Hamlet.  Why was this play such a hit? And how was it understood at a time of dangerous political and military events, in the final years of the Great Queen’s reign?  What is Julius Caesar really about? Simon Gammell is director of the British Institute.
