Guardians and Messengers: Archangels in Florence
Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom and at the British Institute Library

On the occasion of the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, this talk will explore Florentine churches and artworks featuring dedications to these angelic guardians and messengers. Join our Head of History of Art, Jeremy Boudreau, as we survey the various iconographic and stylistic traditions used to represent these Archangels, from their earliest appearances in medieval manuscripts, frescoes and altarpieces, to their renaissance and baroque counterparts that helped to maintain popular devotion to these divine figures through the early modern era and the turbulent years of the Counter-Reformation.
