Ghiberti, Brunelleschi and the Gates of Paradise
A lecture by Jason Arkles
The “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery are one of the most celebrated masterpieces of the Florentine Renaissance. The commission to make them was awarded to Lorenzo Ghilberti, following a ferocious and controversial competition with his erstwhile partner and rival, Filippo Brunelleschi at the start of the 15th century.
Jason Arkles, sculptor and art historian, tells the story of this dramatic confrontation, and takes a close look at the competition panels that Ghiberti and Bruelleschi submitted. Did the right man win?
