Economists and charlatans

Lecture in English by David K. Levine

‘People in this country have had enough of experts’, says Michael Gove. The alternative is to consult charlatans - this has not had a happy history. It’s easy enough to figure out that Sean Penn doesn’t know much about the economy of Venezuela. But what to do when the economic charlatans have Nobel Prizes? The problem of hiring experts without the technical expertise to tell who the charlatans are is a difficult one - and wrong decisions lead to business failures and economic catastrophes.
