Cities of the Levant: a warning from history?

Lecture in English by Philip Mansel

The eminent historian Philip Mansel has written principally about France and the Ottoman empire. His latest book is Aleppo: the Rise and Fall of Syria’s Great Merchant City, while in 2010 he published Levant: Splendour and Catastrophe on the Mediterranean, which has just been published in Italian by Mondadori. In this talk he contrasts the present tragic situation with the former age of tolerance, prosperity and culture.
