SPEAKING DANTE
As the 700th Anniversary of Dante’s death draws to a close, we bring you one last deep dive into the Divine Comedy
The British Institute of Florence has joined forces with J. Productions, Milan (the producers of the extraordinary 24-hour marathon reading of the entire Divine Comedy in Florence) to present four special Zoom sessions, looking closely at some of the most important Cantos.
Each session will explore two selected Cantos with the following sequence:
- Dante scholar Alexandra Lawrence introduces the Canto in discussion with British playwright & classicist Justin Butcher, artistic director of the 24-hour marathon reading
- Professional British actors from the 24-hour marathon cast give a dramatic reading of the Canto in English
- Francesca Mazzotta, an acclaimed Italian poet and Dante scholar, renowned for her beautiful poetry readings, performs the Canto in the original Italian – giving the last word back to Dante
