ART STORIES SERIES - To Giorgio with Love:Vasari’s Lives of the Artists in the Age of Academic Painting

by Jeremy Boudreau

Join Head of History of Art Jeremy Boudreau for the final installment of Art Stories, devoted to tales of Florence’s leading artists as compiled by the 16th-century architect and art historian Giorgio Vasari. From the verifiable and celebrated accounts of their extraordinary achievements, to the anecdotes that defy all evidence, Vasari’s Lives offered a foundational nationalistic visual language to artists studying fine art throughout Italy in the decades following Unification. This talk will explore some of the more colourful of these episodes that have fueled and contaminated scholarship on the subject since its inception (arguably credited to the man himself) through the romantic and comical lens of 19th-century academic painting.

The lecture will be followed by wine and snacks.
