Under the Sign of Donatello - A Tribute to John Pope-Hennessy

Art history is a discipline which helps us to look closer, think critically and understand the meaning of art in the framework of different historical and social contexts. Among the world’s most prominent art history minds one name went down in history, John Pope-Hennessy (London, 1913 / Florence, 1994).  He was a scholar of Italian art and a major proponent of connoisseurship in art history, director of the both the Victoria & Albert and British Museums, London and curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. 100 years from his death the Committee of the Cemetery, the Association Amici degli Allori and Atelier Design of the Universe remember Pope-Hennessy with the cultural event “Under the sign of Donatello” curated bY Elisabeth Vermeer. The scholars Mark Roberts (The British Institute of Florence) and Jonathan Nelson ( Syracuse University of Florence) give two short lectures highlighting Hennessy’s way of understanding history of art. Writers and poets Carlo Accerboni, Milena Buzzoni, Ermengildo Corsini, Nicoletta Manetti, Martina Mei, Patrizia Loria, Mario Pepe, Marisa Tumicelli present their lyrical texts dedicated to Hennessy. The meeting concludes with an a cappella music performance - soprano Rossana Damianelli and baritone Paolo Fabbroni sing medieval madrigals and Renaissance sonnets.
