A lecture by Fabrizio Ricciardelli
The architectural explosion of the Renaissance, driven by a revival of classical principles, contributed to Florence's prominence as a center of architectural innovation. The city's architectural achievements from the thirteenth century onwards built the reputation of Florence as the ideal urban space of the Renaissance - helping to create a paradigm of Florence as the new Rome or Jerusalem or Athens, that would become a magnet for participants in the Grand Tour and subsequent waves of visitors.
Fabrizio Ricciardelli earned his undergraduate degree in Medieval History at the University of Florence (Italy) and his Ph.D. at the University of Warwick (England). In 2012 he was appointed Director of the Kent State University program in Florence. His latest publications are A Short History of Florence (2019) and The Medici. The Power of a Dynasty (2021).
