The Grand Dukes and the Cathedral Facade

A lecture by Timothy Verdon

Among the most important architectural projects of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany was the completion of the Cathedral of Florence with an imposing modern facade. This was never realized, but much effort went into planning it, and the Opera del Duomo Museum has  seven large wood models of the proposals submitted by major 16th- and 17th-century architects. This talk by the Museum’s director, Msgr. Timothy Verdon, analyses the political and aesthetic reasoning behind these handsome models.
