A lecture by Duncan Geddes
Duncan Geddes, Professor Emeritus in Medicine Imperial College, takes us on a medical ward round of medieval and renaissance paintings of miracles and martyrdom – following on from his most entertaining investigation, last year, of the anatomical feasibility and health of the baby Jesus as depicted by the masters.
This talk explores the boundaries of medical realism and religious fantasy. Why did martyrs put up with the pain and what do the viewers, both then and now, get out of these pictures of violence, sex and death?
