Lorenzo Bartolini and the Truth of Nature

A lecture by Jason Arkles

This lecture will examine the education and career of the highly influential 19th century Florentine sculptor, Lorenzo Bartolini.    His evolution from his Neoclassical roots to his role as instigator of a return to nature will be discussed. His search for Beauty and Truth in the 'unimproved' living model led to the infamous 'Lesson of 1840', an event at the Accademia di Belli Arti di Firenze which scandalised the art schools of Europe - for the crime of teaching students to faithfully depict a less-than-perfect living model.
