Henry James in Florence

Henry James and John Singer Sargent in Florence

Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom and at the British Institute Library

by Mark Roberts

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), the leading portrait painter of his generation, is possibly the most eminent foreigner to have been born in Florence. He returned many times to the city of his birth, painting not portraits in oils but watercolour landscapes. The great American novelist Henry James (1843-1916) came 14 times to Florence, which was his favourite city in Italy, and he drew inspiration for three of his novels from the situation of some friends living in the Villa Castellani in Bellosguardo. Sargent and James shared a cosmopolitan upbringing, a dedication to their respective forms of art, and a love of Florence. Through words and images, Mark Roberts examines their relationship to the city and to each other.
