George Eliot and the writing of Romola
Virtual Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom

It was in Florence in 1860 that George Lewes, the companion of Marian Evans (George Eliot), suggested the life and times of Savonarola as a suitable subject for an historical romance. Marian agreed with enthusiasm, and the pair of them embarked on a campaign of research that was repeated in Florence the following year. Romola appeared in instalments between 1862 and 1863.
