Initially used as airy summer apartments, the ground floor of Palazzo Pitti was sumptuously decorated in the 1630s for the wedding of Grand Duke Ferdinand II de’ Medici to his first cousin and last heir to the Duchy of Urbino, Vittoria della Rovere. The union was touted as ushering in a new Golden Age in Florence and the fresco cycle commissioned by the new grand duke was intended to connect him and his new wife to their illustrious ancestor, Lorenzo the Magnificent. Alexandra will walk us through the fascinating pictorial journey that celebrates the role of Lorenzo in transforming Florence into a ‘new Athens’ through his legendary patronage of renowned artists, poets, philosophers and more.
