The period between the late 13th and early 14th centuries saw significant discussion in Italy about the two different political models of republicanism and lordship. The example of the Italian republics has been a fundamental reference point for the values of modern political thought, which has made controversial and sometimes severe judgments in their regard. Yet these republics were experiments that helped to extend the participation in government to large segments of the population.

Dr Ricciardelli is Director of the Kent State University program in Florence.
