Did Raphael have a Florentine Period?

Wednesday Lecture, at the Harold Acton Library and online, on Zoom

by Tom Henry

It is a commonplace to divide the short career of Raphael (1483-1520) into Umbrian, Florentine and Roman phases. But what was the nature of Raphael’s relationship with Florence and did he really have a Florentine period? This lecture will review the evidence and propose that the reality was more nuanced.

Prof. Tom Henry is Professor of History of Art at the University of Kent and until recently Director of the Rome School of Classical and Renaissance Studies. He co-curated the Prado/Louvre exhibition on Late Raphael in 2012-13 and is one of the co-curators of the National Gallery’s Raphael exhibition (postponed from autumn 2020 – spring 2022).

The talk will last about 40 mins, and will be followed by a discussion.
