Lecture in English by Christopher Smith 

The exhibition in Rome in 1937, marking the 2000th anniversary of Augustus’ birth, provoked a variety of responses among British observers.  This lecture will seek to present the complexity of opinion around this remarkable event, including an analysis of the views of Eugenie Strong, formerly Assistant Director of the BSR and still at the time a respected voice on Italian affairs, and making passing reference to the British Institute of Florence.
