History of Art month-long courses:
I. The Renaissance Series
The Renaissance Series is a three month programme made up of 3 individual month-long courses focusing on Italian art from the Middle Ages to the High Renaissance, with an emphasis on Florentine art.
Artists are never examined in isolation but are firmly placed in their social, political, religious and historical context. As well as learning to identify specific styles, subjects and symbols, emphasis is given to the techniques and materials of Italian Renaissance art.
All our courses combine lectures and on-site teaching in museums, churches, palaces, and themed walking tours. Our lecturers represent a mix of nationalities and have their own individual approaches to teaching. The BIF ‘house style’ of lecturing is informal and relaxed, with engagement with the participants a key factor.
Our courses are accessible to those coming to the subject with no previous background in Art History, but are at the same time pitched at a level that will engage all those who are already familiar with the subject.
It is possible to take the courses by week or even by session:
Renaissance Series courses:
40 euros for single sessions - sessions may be taken individually, up to three sessions, then it is necessary to pay for a week (5 sessions).
Shorter courses:
Single session fee on demand - sessions may be taken individually, up to three sessions.
Summer Cycle 2013:
The Dawn of the Renaissance - April 15 - May 10
The Early Italian Renaissance - May 13 - June 7
The Italian High Renaissance - June 10 - July 5
Autumn Cycle 2013:
The Dawn of the Renaissance - September 9 - October 4
The Early Italian Renaissance - October 7 - 28
The Italian High Renaissance - November 4 - 29
II. Combining lectures and tours from the 3 month Renaissance Series programme is a stand-alone 1 month course:
Art in Renaissance Florence 2013 - July 8 - August 2
This course concentrates on key themes and artists from the early and high Renaissance, with, in the first week, an examination of the very early beginnings of the Renaissance in the 14th century.
III. Renaissance Art at the Italian Courts - September 16 - October 11 2013
This new addition to our long-established ‘Renaissance Series’ of month-long courses has come about through the enthusiastic response from many of our loyal art-loving followers who are hungry for more of the same format of a four-week art history course with a mixture of lectures and site visits.
Each week is dedicated to a different princely court – Ferrara, Mantua, Urbino and Medicean Florence – so that the course may be taken in parts or as a whole. In the third week we have a Saturday day trip to the exquisite and intimate Renaissance city of Urbino. Detailed information will be supplied for your independent visits to the cities of Ferrara and Mantua.
This course is aimed at those who have already taken our three-part Renaissance Series and, it goes without saying, to all who are new to the British Institute and who already have some background in Renaissance art.
IV. Thematic short courses and hands-on Workshops
Throughout the year, the British Institute runs a number of short courses of four to five days. These are devised around particular themes and are taught through lectures, site-visits and often hands-on workshops.
While our thematic short courses repeat annually (March: Women in Renaissance Art, May: Florentine Frescoes, September: Experiencing the Renaissance Workshop, December: Awaiting the Nativity) we occasionaly create courses to complement special events or exhibitions in Florence, as with The Sculptor’s Trade (June 2013), which will accompany the Palazzo Strozzi exhibition The Springtime of the Renaissance: Sculpture and the Arts in Florence 1400-1460.
It is possible to take the courses by week or even by session:
