  • 2017 – all year

Centenary Lecture Series. The summer season, generously supported by a grant from Maria Manetti Shrem, will include talks by the director of the British School at Rome, Christopher Smith; the British Ambassador to Italy, Jill Morris; the biographer Flora Fraser; the political scientist Helen Wallace. As usual, variety is the keynote. The full programme is available here.

BRITISH 100 Film Festival: Twice a month with our partner, the historic and beautiful Odeon cinema in Florence, we present films highlighting emerging and prize-winning British directors. 

The next screenings are:

Monday 22 May, 21:00      

The Third Man – Carol Reed (UK, 1949; 104'), with Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten and Alida Valli. Considered by the British Film Institute to be the best British film ever! Restored original version with Italian subtitles.

Tuesday 30 May to Friday 2 June
The Beatles: Sgt Pepper & Beyond –Alan Parker (UK, 2017; 120'). Original version with Italian subtitles. A celebration of one of the most famous albums ever, fifty years on. Screenings: Tuesday 30 May: 17:30 and 21:45; Wednesday 31 May: 21:45; Thursday 1 June: 17:30 and 21:00; Friday 2 June: 18:45 and 21:15.

The festival has already presented screenings of The Entertainer  – Kenneth Branagh Company (UK, 180′), A United Kingdom – Italian premiere – Amma Asante  (UK, 111′), Richard III – Rupert Goold (UK, 180′) and T2 Trainspotting 2 – Danny Boyle (UK/USA, 117′).

  • 5-10 June 2017 and 18-23 September

“100 Treasures of Florence”.  A special ten-session History of Art course to celebrate one hundred Florentine masterpieces with visits to museums and monuments throughout the city. For further information click here.

 

 

 

 

 

  

 

  • 24 June 2017

Award of “Fiorino d’Oro della Città di Firenze” by the Mayor of Florence to the British Institute of Florence. The “Fiorino d’Oro” (Gold Florin) is awarded to Italian and foreign citizens who have honoured the city and served the national and international community.  

           

  • September 2017

Public event in Florence for students, alumni and teachers. "From a Royal Reader to the interactive whiteboard: 100 years of learning English."

  • 7 February 2017, reprise in Florence on 17 May 2017

The Harold Acton lecture in London. This event hosted by the Italian Ambassador in London included a lecture by Jeremy Boudreau, Head of History of Art at the British Institute of Florence entitled: “The Harold Acton lecture: Renaissance Tapestries and Textile Diplomacy." The event was sponsored by Rocco Forte Hotels.

Jeremy Boudreau will deliver an extended version of this lecture in the Harold Acton Library on Wednesday 17 May at 18:00 as part of the cultural programme for Library members. Click here for further information.

100 days from the Centenary. We began the countdown at the Società dei Canottieri. Jill Morris CMG, British Ambassador to Italy announced the donation of € 150 000 by Ferragamo SpA to restore and renovate the Harold Acton Library. The Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella communicated his decision to confer at the British Institute of Florence the highest honour of the city: the Fiorino d'Oro.
