SECRETS OF THE FLORENTINE MASTERS: DRAPERY STUDIES

Wednesday Lecture, on Zoom and at the British Institute Library

by  Alan Pascuzzi

An often-overlooked aspect Renaissance paintings are the multitude of figures all in mantels, cloaks or in some form of drapery.  From the frescoes of Giotto to the Madonnas of Botticelli or Leonardo, drapery was a significant element of painted compositions.  Drapery cannot be 'invented' but must be carefully studied in drawings to ensure naturalistic forms that enhance the figure's movement.  This talk will explore the secret techniques of the Florentine masters through a reconstruction of the step-by-step drawing process used in the Renaissance to make careful studies of drapery for paintings.
