Speaking Dante

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, on September 13 and 14 Cinema La Compagnia will host a unique event organised by J Productions – Milan, in collaboration with Teatro della Pergola, Comune di Firenze and the British Institute of Florence: a marathon of live readings in English of the entire Divine Comedy translated by Robert & Jean Hollander.

The event, curated by theatre producer Julia Holden and directed by the multi-award-winning artist and writer Justin Butcher, will start at 7pm on September 13th and end at 7pm the day after.

The whole event will also be available in live streaming on Più Compagnia from September 13 at 7pm until September 24 at 11pm.

The readings will be performed by many guests: a selection of British artists and international theatre professionals will be live on stage, including Janice Acquah, Eleanor Butcher, Justin Butcher, Mary Chater, Clara Francesca, Andrew Harrison, Rupert Mason, Jan Noble, Amaka Okafor and Kenneth Omole.

The performance will also include video readings by personalities such as Adjoa Andoh, Jessie Buckley, Janie Dee, Stephen Dillane, Rupert Everett, Ralph Fiennes, Kate Fleetwood, Janet Henfrey, Ian McDiarmid, Guy Masterson-Mastroianni, Tim McInnerny, Helen Mirren, John Nettles, Dominic West e Brigid Zengeni.

Video designs by acclaimed artist Damian Hale drawing on the illustrations of William Blake, Gustave Doré and Gabriele dell’Otto, combine with music and sound by award-winning designer Sebastian Frost to conjure a richly textured, haunting immersive experience.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the city’s migrant and refugee organisation Comunità di Sant’Egidio.
