One of the revolutionary aspects of Dante’s Comedy is the position assigned to women during the protagonist’s journey from damnation to the stars. From Francesca da Rimini and St. Lucy, to Beatrice and many more, women contribute exciting and essential action to the narrative. This lecture will look at the women from Dante’s life in Florence, as well as popular female saints and contemporary noblewomen in Italy, to better understand the influences they had on his magnum opus, and the crucial roles they play.
