Illuminating the Past

A workshop to create an illuminated letter of your choice in the magnificent Ottonian style of the 10th and 11th centuries

Thursday 29 October, 17:00-20:00

In this workshop, Alison Salmon will provide all the materials and guidance you need to create an illuminated letter of your choice in the magnificent Ottonian style of the 10th and 11th centuries.

Inspired by the sumptuous manuscripts produced for the Ottonian emperors, this refined style evolved from Carolingian traditions and was enriched by Anglo-Saxon and Celtic interlace, as well as Italian artistic influences.

Working on fine goatskin parchment, you will begin by outlining your chosen letter in red ink before applying 23-carat gold leaf using the traditional flat-gilding technique. You will then complete your design with vibrant blue and green pigments, creating a beautiful illuminated letter to take home.

Come and relax for an afternoon away from the crowds and enjoy the meditative and spiritual process of illumination!
