In this workshop,  Alison Salmon will guide you in recreating this exquisite letter S, originally part of a choir book from San Lucchese. Recovered by the police after it was stolen in 1932, its warm red and gold background and floral forms make it a truly splendid example of Renaissance illuminated lettering.

The 23-karat gold leaf and goatskin parchment are included together with period pigments in small shells, such as azurite blue and buckthorn green, and a step-by-step guide to help you to finish or recreate the letter at home.

All materials provided.

You can join the four-hour morning session to learn Renaissance illumination techniques and begin your design. You’ll take your materials home to complete the work — or stay for two additional guided hours in the afternoon to finish your letter with expert support.
