San Salvi

Complement your month-long immersion in Cinquecento art with a special guided visit to the lesser-known Cenacolo and Museum of San Salvi. Situated just outside the historic center of Florence, this former Vallumbrosan monastery is home to Andrea del Sarto's fresco of the Last Supper, a Renaissance masterpiece completed between 1520 and 1527. Discover the unique history of this artistic treasure, which survived the siege of Florence in 1530 when a captain, captivated by its beauty, ordered his men to save the wall on which it was painted. Inside, explore the tranquil refectory and the adjacent museum, which houses a remarkable collection of paintings by Andrea del Sarto and his contemporaries, including Pontormo and Franciabigio. This visit will provide invaluable context and highlight the transition from the traditions of the quattrocento art to the innovations of the High Renaissance.
