Medici Chapels

Explore the political and artistic grandeur of the Medici dynasty with a visit to the Medici Chapels, the family's opulent mausoleum and a testament to their power and patronage. The chapels are a two-part monument: the magnificent Chapel of the Princes, an immense octagonal space covered in intricate hard-stone inlays (commesso fiorentino) and a lavish display of Medici wealth. The second part, the New Sacristy, is a tour de force of architecture and sculpture by Michelangelo. Here you'll find the artist's unfinished tombs for Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, and his uncle Giuliano, Duke of Nemours, adorned with his iconic allegorical figures of "Day," "Night," "Dawn," and "Dusk." These deeply symbolic and emotionally charged works reflect the turmoil and philosophical complexities of the era. The visit will provide a deeper understanding of Michelangelo's evolving style and the Medici family’s grandest funerary commission.
