Pictures, words and the imagination in Cimabue’s Vita Christi

Lecture in English by Holly Flora

Cimabue (ca 1240-1302) painted a famous cycle of murals in the apse of the Upper Church of the Basilica of San Francesco at Assisi, the space used by the friars for celebrating Mass. This lecture will explore how these paintings encouraged a multi-sensory experience of the liturgy while emphasizing key tenets of the Franciscan Order. Holly Flora is Associate Professor of Art History at Tulane, and currently a Fellow at Harvard’s Villa I Tatti.
