The contribution of women to cinema has too often remained in the shadows of history. Florence’s renowned international documentary film festival, the Festival dei Popoli, has launched Women Trailblazers in Documentary Cinema, a three-year Florence-based project developed in collaboration with the Calliope Arts Foundation. The initiative seeks to reshape our understanding of an important chapter in the history of cinema by bringing greater visibility to pioneering women documentary filmmakers whose achievements have long been overlooked.
Alessandro Stellino will discuss some of the leading women filmmakers featured in this year’s edition of the Festival dei Popoli (31 October–8 November), exploring their artistic vision, filmmaking techniques, and cultural impact. He will examine the work of the American director Barbara Kopple, marking the fiftieth anniversary of her Oscar-winning documentary Harlan County, U.S.A. (1976), alongside case studies of contemporary feminist filmmakers and women celebrated in previous editions of the festival, including the pioneering Pan-African filmmaker Sarah Maldoror and the acclaimed Hungarian director Judit Elek.
Alessandro Stellino is the artistic director of Festival dei Popoli in Florence, the world’s oldest documentary film festival.
