Transvestites, Anchorites, Wives, & Martyrs: Female Saints in Popular Renaissance Legends
A lecture by Lisa Kaborycha

Chaste maidens disguised as monks, scandalous women transformed into desert ascetics, elegant wives secretly practicing extreme penance, and fearless martyrs who endured unimaginable torments rather than renounce their faith — these are just some of the extraordinary female saints whose dramatic legends circulated throughout the Quattrocento.
In this talk, cultural historian Lisa Kaborycha explores the vivid world behind these stories. Beyond their striking depictions in Renaissance art, these tales reveal surprising insights into the beliefs, hopes, and imaginations of the people who told and cherished them. Fascinating, moving, and often wonderfully entertaining, these narratives bring to life a side of Renaissance culture that is rarely seen.
